Sport-shoe and apparel giant Nike Inc. (NKE) reported net income rose 51% in its 2008 fiscal first quarter Thursday, with strong sales in Europe and Asia making up for slower growth in the U.S.
Net income rose to $569.7 million, or $1.12 cents a share, in the quarter ended Aug. 31, from $377.2 million, or 74 cents a share, a year ago. Results were sharply higher than analysts' earnings projection of 87 cents a share, according to a survey by Thomson Financial.
