European stock markets remained somewhat higher Thursday, even though Wall Street was expected to open slightly lower, as any relief generated by strong first quarter profit at JP Morgan Chase & Co. was offset by news that U.S. mall operator General Growth Properties Inc. has filed for bankruptcy protection.
