View Full Version : November 2006 Trading Simulator contest - First Prize $100.00

Thierry Martin
11-01-2006, 07:22 AM
I have set up another trading simulator for November - 1st prize is $100, 2nd and 3rd prizes are trading books.

If you already played in previous competitions, you already have an account and your can just continue trading, your portfolio will be set back to $100,000.

If you are new to the simulator, you can join at anytime up to November 23. You must use the same username as you use here. This thread will be used to discuss the game and post updates on the standings.

You start with $100,000 and you can trade stocks long or short. We are not trading options anymore, as they made the results swing wildly both ways. Whoever has the highest amount at the close of trading on October 31, 2006 wins.

The trading simulator/contest is open only to registered members of this forum. (Registering is free!)

Send me a private message (http://www.cramersmadmoney.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) and I will send you the link for your free sign up.

Short selling IS enabled - we have a "premium" account that I pay for. It is not the same setup as the free contests that they run.

Here's a screen shot of the message box;

Invalid Trade: No Short Sales Sorry, no short selling is allowed in this group. In our simulator each game can be created with different characteristics. This game in particular does not allow short selling. If you wish to trade short, join another game that has this feature under the "groups" tab.

I'm about ready to say Uncle this month...it won't let me buy $99k worth of a stock...says I have insufficient funds....although it shows the $100k I started with and I haven't made a trade yet?

Their technical support is looking at the setup because there are some anomolies. Something is screwy, will let you know when it is fixed. We might have to start this month's contest tomorrow. This happened last month also.

What a major bummer dude, I could have locked in $16k if that short trade had gone through, damn those Investopedia fools. Hey, while you're yacking with them, tell them that 20 minute delay is really a pia when trying to catch a momentum play, I'm usually ready to sell before my buy order even goes through. Wonder what else I can bitch about that's free?

bah--investopedia is just getting worse. I've seen market orders not processing for a whole hour, random 'security not trading' order failures on stocks that obviously are, bid/ask prices not hitting that I know hit on yahoo/any other service (I'm talking 5-cent differences that caused orders to never go through), and as previously stated, no short orders no matter the price. I duno, maybe I'm just being a bitch. Nevertheless, I've been toying around with VSE and it's pretty damn efficient. It doesn't trade options but we're not doing that anymore anyways.

OK, there are enough problems that I don't believe the game is fair so I am cancelling this game and starting a new one at MarketWatch.

Just email me if you want to join, I have sent an email to all the current players.

The contest starts now so you should register and get your orders in. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the new platform seems to work much better.

Good luck, everyone!

i set up a vse account, even logged in and checked out a few other games over the weekend. now i get bad screen name/ password message. i tried to fix it myself with a password reset, but i keep getting the bad s/n or pass message. also, as a side note, my long running investopedia account was lost when Thierry moved his game. have to redo my registration like i was never there. but i still get their term of the day mail and other junk- very odd. anyhow good luck all, and thanks again Thierry for helping to keep us all interested!

Not to be a nub or anything, but I'm curious how much the advertising brings in. How much is the $100 comparable to what's coming in? Which is not to say you're work torwards the forum isn't 100% appreciated and you don't deserve more than whatever that sum is; I'm just curious.

I'd also be into the winner-take-all idea, actually. Very cool idea.

I own and operate 22 financial websites, and some of the advertising runs across all the sites, so it is very difficult to have a profit/loss statement on a site by site basis. Some months we are ahead, and some months we are in the hole. The last couple of months have been very difficult, because I was misled into believing some payments were coming in and they have been delayed. Overall all my opeations taken together are profitable, but because I have been investing heavily in new projects, our cash flow is erratic. I take responsibility for the late payments, but enjoying life is my number one priority, and if I have made myself vulerable to attacks, I will change the situation to avoid this kind of grief.

Thierry my man. I totally respect what you're doing and all, but does one person's online sarcasm really get to you that much that it affects your overall sense of well being? The $100 is insignificant; it was nice of you to ever do it. I'd assume once you get up from the chair it's really not much of a strain. It is a forum, afterall; and reef really didn't seem (to me at least) all that hostile.

This is getting blown out of proportion. Everyone will get their prizes. My overall sense of well being is fine. Normally $100 is not much of a strain, when you're missing several thousand dollars it is a lot.

I'm not sure, but I imagine they wouldn't allow it, just as with a real broker you can't cancel a trade (unless it hasn't been executed, which usually happens within seconds.)

If it's not executed, you can cancel it , then go back and enter a new order with the changed specifications. Of course you're still limited to the 20 minute delay on the cancelled order too, it will show pending for the time delay. After it's cancelled you can place the new one and wait another 20 minutes for it to be confirmed.

I'm about 3 months behind with the books and the prizes, for both the monthly and weekly contests. We will send out everything shortly, as soon as I receive an advertising check long overdue.

The books are already purchased, and sitting right here in my office, but it costs me about $10 a book to ship them, so I need my money before sending them. Sorry about the delay, it shouldn't happen again after this batch. If I have any more cash flow problems, I will cancel the prizes for future contests, but I don't think that will be necessary.

I saw that drop in the game, I was hoping you were able to cover your real shares quicker than you did the game. If it's any consolation, I was getting ready to pull the trigger at about $36 when I got called away from the pc...came back a few minutes later and it was at $46 headed to $48....yeah I'm bummed. Waiting for another good entry point, I'm loathe to pay over $40 with today's volatility though.
