There was much to ponder at the start of summer this year. America had not passed its financial reform bill, regulators were attacking Goldman Sachs, and no one knew how much capital banks would be forced to have. Even beyond banks, earnings were hard to predict because global economic growth was, too. Then there were the possible repercussions of BP’s failure to stop its oil leak, not to mention the tension of the World Cup.
